Finja Sander was born in 1996 in Hildesheim, Germany. She lives and works in Berlin, Germany. For four years Sander has been concentrating on the medium of performance art. The works show themselves mostly in live performances, short interventions, as well as in photographic / film documentation and spatial installations. Naturally, she also locates herself in the field of photography, film, and spatial art. Since 2017, over 27 performative works have been created that relate to one another to varying degrees and repeatedly influence one another. What they have in common, is mostly based on recurring materials and locations that change and develop in terms of their properties and quality in each new performance. The decisive point in Sander's work gets apparent when her body becomes the material itself and the supposed hierarchy of subject and object seems to dissolve. The performative act and the processes involved require that the body, material, and environment align each other, negotiate with each other, work off each other. Her body acts intuitively and is exposed to its environment. He transforms and materializes. As a result, it functions as a sculptural object that constantly creates images that can be seen in an art-historical context, as a critical commentary on current debates, or as a discourse about human beings as creators of culture. To abstract her body in the manner described, Sander usually performs naked. In this way, she creates a starting point that takes place on a different level of reality. The viewer is challenged by her to abandon viewing habits and learned thought patterns and get involved in her work. This creates - in the best case - a moment that brings about a state of mere existence. In some works, she primarily reacts to site-specific conditions without performing with any additional material. Sander answers, or else she comes to terms with the situation she has found with her physical presence. Within these interventions, she interacts with recipients, consciously requests contact, and is guided by the different reactions in her behavior.
