Animation of Dead Material

The exhibition, which shows the work of 34 artists from Valérie Favre's painting class, creates an opportunity to question the vitality of painting. The exhibition "Animation Of Dead Material" explores the materiality of artworks, their presence while being interacted with as well as in the absence of the spectator. The question could be summed up as follows: does painting live only when we look at it or does it have a life of its own? Does it live for itself? We have repeatedly heard assertions such as "Painting speaks to you.", "It tells you a story.", "It gives you emotion.". Although personified, it is always in relation with the one who looks at it. 

In her book Isabelle Graw develops the thought that the work interacts with the viewer as a projection surface for thoughts and imagination.

Its materiality is a reference to the actions of the past and through the ghostly presence of the artist it becomes personified. However, can't we also see the works as beings on their own? They consist of a constantly changing material and they react to the elements around them. On a visual level the surface changes. The oil paint reacts with oxygen and takes years to dry. Thus, always different, they influence the environment that surrounds them and are transformed within it.

The arrangement of works of thirtyfour artists reflects these aspects: The works are linked to their creators, their thoughts, their gestures; exhibited in the space they become the platform for the emotional and narrative projections of the visitors. They also leave open the question of their evolution: if today they are highlighted and related to a constellation of objects and individuals, how will they evolve tomorrow and in what kind of environment? How will they influence it? In parallel to the pictorial works presented; photographs and objects in space extend these questions. Performances and one discussion panel will complete these five days of rich impressions and reflections.

Die Ausstellung mit Arbeiten von 34 Künstlerinnen und Künstlern aus der Malereiklasse von Valérie Favre, bietet Gelegenheit, die Vitalität der Malerei zu hinterfragen. Die Ausstellung "Animation of Dead Material" untersucht die Materialität von Kunstwerken, ihre Präsenz in der Interaktion mit und in Abwesenheit des Betrachters. Die Frage ließe sich wie folgt zusammenfassen: Lebt die Malerei nur, wenn wir sie anschauen, oder hat sie ein Eigenleben? Lebt sie für sich selbst? Wir haben immer wieder Behauptungen gehört wie: "Die Malerei spricht zu dir", "Sie erzählt dir eine Geschichte", "Sie gibt dir Emotionen". Obwohl sie personifiziert ist, steht sie immer in Beziehung zu demjenigen, der sie anschaut. 

Isabelle Graw entwickelt in ihrem Buch den Gedanken, dass das Werk als Projektionsfläche für Gedanken und Vorstellungskraft mit dem Betrachter interagiert.

Seine Materialität ist ein Verweis auf die Handlungen der Vergangenheit, und durch die geisterhafte Präsenz der Künstler*in wird es personifiziert. Können wir die Werke aber nicht auch als eigenständige Wesen sehen? Sie bestehen aus einem sich ständig verändernden Material und sie reagieren auf die Elemente um sie herum. Auf einer visuellen Ebene verändert sich die Oberfläche. Die Ölfarbe reagiert mit Sauerstoff und braucht Jahre, um zu trocknen. So beeinflussen sie, immer verschieden, die Umgebung, die sie umgibt, und werden in ihr transformiert.

Die Auswahl der Werke von 34 Künstlerinnen und Künstlern spiegelt diese Aspekte wieder: Die Arbeiten sind mit ihren Schöpfern, ihren Gedanken, ihren Gesten verbunden; im Raum ausgestellt werden sie zur Plattform für die emotionalen und narrativen Projektionen der Besucher. Sie lassen auch die Frage nach ihrer Entwicklung offen: Wenn sie heute hervorgehoben und auf eine Konstellation von Objekten und Individuen bezogen werden, wie werden sie sich morgen entwickeln und in welcher Art von Umgebung? Wie werden sie diese beeinflussen? Parallel zu den präsentierten Bildwerken erweitern Fotografien und Objekte im Raum diese Fragen. Performances und eine Diskussionsrund vervollständigen diese fünf Tage voller Eindrücke und Reflexionen.
