University of Greenwich Galleries was set up in 2013 to manage the expansion in gallery provision resulting from the development of the new academic building in Stockwell Street. There are now three exhibition spaces on the Greenwich Campus: The Stephen Lawrence Gallery; The Project Space and the Heritage Gallery; each venue has its own distinct character, both in terms of location as well as the style and content of the programming. In combination, they offer a variety of exhibition experiences to the diverse range of audiences who come to us. Further information on each of the spaces can be found on our website.
The University of Greenwich founded the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in 2000 following the publication of the Macpherson report into the police handling of the Stephen Lawrence murder enquiry. The gallery was the initiative of Paul Stigant, working in close partnership with Stephen’s mother, Doreen Lawrence, who had been a student at the University in 1993 when Stephen was murdered in a racist attack. The gallery has had a number of homes at the University, beginning with the former Woolwich Campus, where Paul Stigant was Dean, it then moved to the Maritime Campus and now is to be found in the new academic building in Stockwell Street, where the subject specialisms of architecture, creative professions and digital arts inform and are informed by the gallery programme.
The Stephen Lawrence Gallery aims to promote diversity in the representation of visual cultures through mainly curated group exhibitions featuring the work of young contemporary visual practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, including artists, designers, and architects. The gallery stages a programmed series of six curated exhibitions each year with accompanying conferences and workshops. The exhibitions, as well as many of the associated events, are open to the public as well as members of the University. In addition, the gallery hosts end-of-year student shows and regularly platforms project-based activities in the local community.
