Sailortowns were places where sailors often lived, visited and were entertained. Sailortowns were described as a ‘world of sordid pleasure, unlimited vice, and lashings of booze, but a dangerous place too’.
Sailortowns were places where sailors often lived, visited and were entertained. Sailortowns were described as a ‘world of sordid pleasure, unlimited vice, and lashings of booze, but a dangerous place too’.
The walk will explore the unique culture and representation of three sailortowns of Portsmouth that evolved between the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries. The walk will begin in Commercial Road, which had become the heart of sailortown in the early twentieth century and end at Spice Island where sailors of the eighteenth were entertained.
The event will end in Spice Island Inn showcasing the electronic mapping project developed by the Port Towns & Urban Cultures research group, and the launch of an interactive phone app of the walk. Participants will be invited to contribute stories and information to be added to the interactive app.
This event is part of the Being Human Festival, taking place all over the country, including Portsmouth.
