"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” —F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

About

Now that summer in the UK and across Europe is finally here, lockdown restrictions are eased and we slowly emerge from months of isolation, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s description of summer as symbolic of life beginning anew seems especially resonant right now. Surrounded by signs of growth and new-found freedoms, this summer in particular feels full of moments of possibility. Art is especially well-equipped to make sense of these strange times.

NoonPowell’s summer exhibition brings together artists whose work speaks in varied ways to the complex feelings associated with the confinement of the last three months as well as the sense of release and celebration as summer and relative freedoms return. Encompassing painting, sculpture and photography,  the works included explore a variety of subjects and contexts spanning the relationship between paint, colour and lived experience; the built environment; the landscape; renewal, meditation and self care; reconnecting with nature; visual perception; memory; the confluence of science and art.
