Everyone knows that the Walker Art Gallery has one of the most impressive collections of fine and decorative art in Europe - but did you know that the gallery also has an ever-growing collection of contemporary art?

The Walker is home to the UK's best-known painting prize, the John Moores Painting Prize, which forms a major strand of Liverpool Biennial. Every two years the competition features some of Britain's most innovative and talented painters and this is reflected in the Walker's displays and collections.

Past winners whose paintings have been acquired by the Walker include David Hockney, Lisa Milroy and Peter Doig.

The Walker's contemporary collection spans the full range of 20th century art and beyond. Impressionism, post-impressionism, symbolism and Camden Town are all represented and the walls are crowded with household names such as Lucian Freud, Henry Moore, Harold Gilman, Walter Sickert and LS Lowry.

For children (and the young at heart) there is the ground-breaking Big Art - a specially designed children's gallery created with the help of Little Artists, John Cake Darren Neave.

In addition to its impressive contemporary displays, the Walker is also renowned for the depth of its Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelite collections. It features a spectacular sculpture gallery, a craft and design section and a welcoming café in spectacular surroundings.
