The exhibition examines the historical relation between aesthetics and ideology in artistic production in relation to Notgeld from 1918-23.

About

The exhibition "Subjects of Emergency" by Julian Irlinger is dedicated to the reconstruction of a historical relation between aesthetics and ideology in artistic production. The artist’s source material is banknotes of the emergency currency which circulated during inflation in Germany (1918-1923) as a parallel currency to the Mark of the Reichsbank. Printed on the bills were pictures by artists, which often had political backgrounds. The details of the money reproduced by Irlinger have a seductive quality and show a subtle sense of humor as well as the dark side of the pop culture of the Weimar Republic.
