Five Years gallery present an exhibition of experimental photographic drawings by artist Mary Yacoob, devised during a one year residency at print studio Mutton Fist Press.

About

The drawings of the artist Mary Yacoob, adapting the materials and conceptual tools of technical plan drawing, describe a cryptic architecture of imaginary schematics.

Created under ultraviolet light, using processes of optical and kinetic mark-making, the works are both influenced by and evoke the geometry of machine tools, astrolabes, circular and rotating “tacho” discs, gearboxes depicted in cross-section, transmitting energy to parts of an internal combustion engine or mechanical system, and the dispersion of electrons in a cloud chamber or crystals in a storm glass. With subtle texture and mysterious and atmospheric coloration, these drawings transmit energy through light and line, through rhythmic gestural actions and transformations.

Mary Yacoob’s practice encompasses pen and ink drawing on paper, print-making, wall drawing, large format vinyl artworks and luminous constructions. She appropriates visual languages from architectural plans, maps, geological and engineering diagrams, and from alphabets and musical notation.

Mary Yacoob is an artist based in London, who studied at Central Saint Martins and the Cass School of Art. Solo exhibitions include the Hospital Club, the Centre for Recent Drawing (C4RD) and Seven Seven Gallery. Group exhibitions include the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2019, Guest Projects, Saturation Point, Platform A, Gallery 46, PayneShurvell, Dark Matter, Galerie8 and Ovada. Residencies include the AA2A residency at Camberwell College of Art print department in 2011 and Mutton Fist Press in 2019.

The Private View on 23 January includes the launch of the exhibition catalogue, featuring all the works in the exhibition and a transcript of the artist in conversation with the artist Bob and Roberta Smith.
