In the close proximity of a shared studio, Harriette Lloyd, Claire Shakespeare and Lydia Stonehouse engage with the process of painting, in search of the things that naturally escape language, or at least verbal language. These three emerging artists speak something of a shared painterly language: gesture, mark making, and textures, triggering a recollection of something familiar and yet not quite reachable. 

For Shakespeare the search is for form in the no-man’s land between abstraction and figuration, similarly with Stonehouse we’re presented with the meeting of recognisable form with something less tangible in the sensory hum of a corporeal moment. A change of pace in Lloyd’s quieter contemplative works lets us ponder the absent and search out the missing, only to find, just like putting words to this painterly language – it remains just out of reach.
