About

Dot to Dot

Coachwerks, Brighton

4th-14th August 2022

Dot to Dot showcases the work of eight artists which focus on the core idea of connection in their practices – joining the dots, if you will…

As artists we pay close attention to the way our minds are constantly making associations, often between seemingly unconnected instances yet linked through smells, tastes, sounds, sentences, sights, and emotional responses that rise up to the surface from somewhere within us. It’s our endeavour to bring consciousness to this web of subconscious connections born out of our own life experiences, and to find a visual language that unlocks these recollections.

In the studio we join the dots in other ways; instinctively selecting colours, materials, subjects and even actions that spark associations which, when combined are evocative of a larger recalled experience. Each work in the show is a culmination of a series of choices predominantly made intuitively in response to recalling these moments of heightened awareness of our human existence and the world we inhabit.

These choices in the studio become dots – markers of connection, which overtime have joined up and become a distinctive and deeply personal pictorial network unique to each artist. Colour, line, gesture, shape and texture when used intuitively becomes a language of the subconscious - a visual telling of an experience words can’t quite reach. On some level these formal qualities remain universal, lending the viewer their own moments of connection triggered by the associations they carry within themselves.
