Immortal Poets: an exhibition of calligraphy and etching

About

Can calligraphy in the West reach the status of an art as it is in the Far East? Can a picture illustrate a complex text or can the text become a complex picture? These questions are provoked by the work of Roger Hobdell. The heart of this exhibition is taken from a series of thirty-six major English poets, beginning with Beowulf. These are large pieces, 100cm x 70cm, and are positioned somewhere between pure calligraphy and fine art, a place where Hobdell is happy to explore.
