About
In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic (the present-day Netherlands) was amongst the world’s wealthiest and most influential countries.
Its economy grew rapidly, fuelled by its colonial and mercantile reach, which extended across the globe. A thriving art market developed. Painters such as Hals and Rembrandt captured and memorialised the likeness of the ruling bourgeois class, whereas a host of skilful but now lesser-known artists portrayed the aspirations, fears, shortcomings and achievements of a new-born nation.
Join Dr Carlo Corsato and Dr Matthew Morgan on a tour of the National Gallery’s Dutch masters and discover how they created moralising genre scenes, still lives, and some of the most life-like portraits ever painted.
This event is related to 'The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Frans Hals'.
