On the 7th December 2016 Elizabeth James Gallery opened its doors after having successfully competed with numerous other businesses in the Croydon Councils competition aimed at regenerating SE25 to win the space.
We are a contemporary art gallery and boutique gift shop in the heart of South Norwood hosting exhibitions with guest artists, inspiring and interactive workshops for all skill levels and ages, and facilitating exciting Live Art Saturdays that allow visitors the opportunity to see artists create in the window of the gallery.
At Elizabeth James Gallery we have made art creation an activity that the entire family can enjoy – from tiny tots to super seniors. Our artists have come from diverse backgrounds and always present authentic works of art that are of a premium standard. Our visitors have hailed from more than 5o different countries in the world and various parts of the United Kingdom including our very own Mayor of the London Borough of Croydon, Councillor Toni Letts and Labour Councillor for South Norwood Patsy Cummings.
Throughout the year we have welcomed visits from schools and provided bespoke workshops that enhanced the curriculum and inspired children to challenge their personal creative borders. We believe that it is important for children to be introduced to positive ways of expression from an early age and are familiarized with the various mediums that fall under the umbrella of art.
In our first year we were privileged to provide a launch space for the CaribArt Project – the only Caribbean Regional platform solely aimed at immortalizing, through art, Caribbean cultural heritage with works produced by Caribbean artists. This historic event was endorsed by the High Commissioner of Trinidad & Tobago who was present at the launch and quite impressed with quality and authenticity of the complete sensory experience created at the gallery. We now offer a ‘Caribbean Storytelling Kids Experience’ and ‘Teen Macafouchette Workshops’ that educate participants on Caribbean culture using the arts.
Our community outreach programmes are certainly not limited to the United Kingdom. It is important in times of tragedy to lend a helping hand to those in need. Our hearts and monetary contributions went out to the tiny island of Dominica that was completed devastated by hurricane. We successfully hosted a ‘Help for Dominica Raffle’ where artists donated works of art to the gallery that were offered as prizes. The raffle was well subscribed and proceeds of this fundraiser were directed to Dominican families in need.
As 2017 draws to a close and we celebrate our first birthday we express our gratitude for your support and look forward to greater pursuits in the coming year as we expand our reach. We hope that you continue on this journey with us and ask that you continue to subscribe and share our activities with your loved ones and friends.
It has been a pleasure serving you this past year!
