The picture is divided into four quadrants: day is on the left, and night on the right; sky above, water below. The horizon line, ship, and full moon suffice to localize the picture. The twilight manifests itself in colored veils, the starry sky in splashes of color.
Where is the ship headed? Into the darkness, or toward the light? Is it daytime or nightfall? Arrival or departure? Tobias Wyrzykowski’s pictures seem both enraptured and reductive. The viewer observes events from afar. Recurring motifs include the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air, plus stars and comets, coastlines and horizons, snow and ice, mountains, meadows. Human traces are few: from time to time a ship, a bridge, a missile, a house. Tobias Wyrzykowski speaks of intangible visual worlds that are not arbitrary but instead – like dream images – ambiguous. They arise intuitively, depending upon the mood, when lost in thought, even perhaps by chance, or drawing upon the vestiges of a dream. Even the journey to the studio, along the Rhine in Düsseldorf, is a kind of retreat for him, en route toward a perhaps unattainable goal, remote from everything – painting as a place of yearning.
