Pungkai was born Peter Bertani in 1958 in Boddington, Western Australia. His father (deceased) was an Italian immigrant and his mother (deceased) was a Nyoongar woman. In 1980 he moved to Nyapari, a tiny community at the base of the Mann Ranges on the South Australian-Northern Territory border; Nyapari is home to the Stevens family, and Tjungu Palya. Pungkai paints his traditional Aboriginal tjukurrpa ('Dreaming') stories from Western Australia and South Australia, as well as works that are politically and environmentally charged. Pungkai is represented in the Art Gallery of South Australia, Artbank, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Adelaide Airport Limited, Lagerberg Swift Collection, Perth, Merenda Collection, Perth, Marshall Collection, Adelaide, W. & V.
