Josef Albers (b. Germany, 1888, d. U.S., 1976) is a pioneering abstractionist, color theorist, and one of the most influential art teachers of the twentieth century. In addition to teaching at the Bauhaus and leading the Yale University School of Design, Albers is best known for his Homages to the Square—oil on panel paintings for which he developed precise arrangements of nested squares of solid colors, centered along the vertical axis but weighed downward along the horizontal axis. Pace has represented the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation since 2003.
