The history of the current art museum begins when on September 27, 1951, the rector Pedro Dulanto, founded the Museum of Pictorial Reproductions, which was added on February 17, 1970 thanks to the management of Dr. Francisco Stastny, the Museum of Art and History to preserve the set of relics of historical and artistic value that the university possessed. On October 23, 1996, the rector Manuel Paredes Manrique, merged both institutions to make it the current San Marcos Art Museum (MASM).

The museum was born with the mission of housing, organizing, conserving and valuing the cultural artistic heritage of the UNMSM. In addition to promoting knowledge of new aesthetic trends through exhibitions, publications, contests, workshops and other activities in order to train and educate, from the perspective of art, the student and the community in general.
