The Lewis H. Latimer Fund, Inc. was established to preserve and promote the legacy of Lewis Howard Latimer (b.1848), the self-taught African-American inventor, electrical pioneer, poet, painter, and son of fugitive slaves. His historic, Landmarked home, the Lewis Latimer House Museum, is a fully functional public, cultural institution that provides primary research materials dedicated to his memory and that of other innovators of color who have made contributions to technology and the American life. The Museum offers STEAM educational programs, exhibitions and public programs in poetry, arts, technology, and social justice. Latimer's life story is used as a point of departure from which to examine issues of race, class, immigration and contemporary events.
