The building was constructed after the Beyoğlu fire of June 5th 1870, on the area called Cadde-i Kebir (Grand Rue de Pera) during the reign of Sultan Abdulaziz. It was built as a winter mansion for one of the businessmen on that period, Agop Köçeyan. Köçeyan then donated the building to Taksim Vosgeperan Armenian Church and later it became a possession of Aziz and Ahmet Borovalı brothers in 1940s. In the backyard of the historical mansion one of the grandest multifunctional halls of the era, “The Atlas Cinema” was getting assembled during 1948. In 1970s, Cevher Özden bought the building. It was out of use for a while before it was transferred to the State Treasury in 1985. Lastly the building was assigned to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1992.

After the thorough restoration provided by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2019-2020, the historical Atlas Building regained its original glory. This complete renewal led to Atlas Cinema’s re-functionalization and it has been re-named as the newly opened Istanbul Cinema Museum as well.
