Marlborough Madrid was founded in Madrid in 1992 with a famous inaugural exhibition showing the last ten years of Francis Bacon's work. This was the last solo exhibition organised during the artist's lifetime. In 2006, the Marlborough Gallery opened a second space in Barcelona, where it continues its legacy in contemporary art and representation of the most famous and prominent artists from across the country.

Marlborough collaborates on an ongoing basis with Marlborough New York and London to present the work of international and emerging artists in Spain. In addition to the primary market, the Marlborough Gallery is committed to the acquisition and sale of 20th century masterpieces. It continues to work with the most important museum collections and public spaces in Spain by organising projects and solo and group exhibitions of its artists. Among these exhibitions, the following stand out: Antonio López García at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (1993) and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid (2011); Manolo Valdés at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (2006); Juan Genovés at the Instituto Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM; 1993) and the Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid (2018). At the end of 2019, the Marlborough Gallery will organise a retrospective exhibition of Juan Genovés' work in Russia at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow. Moreover, Marlborough Gallery has organised solo exhibitions of several internationally renowned artists, such as: the Paula Rego retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (2007); Richard Estes: The Sensuality of the Real at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid (2007); and Magdalena Abakanowicz's King Arthur's Court, organised by the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía at the Parque del Retiro in Madrid (2008).

Marlborough Madrid has earned a reputation for its dedication to public projects and exhibitions of monumental sculpture in Spain's major cities. In 1994, the gallery organised the Botero exhibition in Madrid, displaying 20 of the famous monumental bronze figures along the Paseo de la Castellana. In 2006, the gallery organised Arte en la calle, Manolo Valdés: escultura monumental, a travelling exhibition of the artist's work which, over the course of 3 years, travelled to 20 Spanish cities. More recently, in 2015, the Marlborough Gallery organised Citadel, an exhibition of monumental sculpture by David Rodríguez-Caballero which is exhibited inside the walls and gardens of the Citadel, a Renaissance fortification in Pamplona.

Marlborough Madrird represents the work of more than 20 artists and works of art that have formed part of its identity since its beginnings. Among them are the legendary artist Antonio López-García, the painters Juan Genovés and Luis Gordillo, as well as the sculptors David Rodríguez Caballero and Francisco Leiro.
