Elijah Wheat Showroom (est. 2015) is a New York-based artist-run gallery and nomadic curatorial experience founded by Carolina Wheat & Liz Nielsen whom previously ran Chicago’s Swimming Pool Project Space (2008-2011). The New York gallery has showcased over fifty exhibitions, most at their Bushwick, Brooklyn location. Now their exhibition space is in Newburgh, NY.
The duo also activates non-traditional gallery spaces in large-scale ‘venues’ with a volume of inventory. Including twice at the Knockdown Center, Queens, also in empty factories in Peckham, London and Newburgh, NY. Part of the original 11 founders of the Nasty Women Exhibition, 2017, managing: artists’ communications, inventory logistics and installation. Earning $50,000 in proceeds benefiting Planned Parenthood while garnering the attention of Fast Company, The Guardian, The Cut, among others. Another exhibition, Transaction, 2016, a conceptual meditation with artists’ talismans or personal objects begat the attention of Roberta Smith at the New York Times and Jerry Saltz on Vulture.
The curatorial unveiling of EWS portrays profoundly crafted work with integrity induced conceptuality. Offering inaugural solo shows for dozens of artists many whose careers have blossomed since.
The gallery is named after their late son, Elijah, whose creative insight, righteous vision, perceptive being and stylistic voice for trendsetting embody the spirit that the Showroom honors. EWS works closely with artists that are socially conscientious, politically engaged and reflective of a creative community striving to cultivate interactions and instigate conversations accessible to all audiences.
