eastcontemporary is an independent exhibition space dedicated to research, development and promotion of contemporary art and culture through exhibitions, public program, publications, residencies and partnerships.  

Our mission is to foster creativity, facilitate artistic exchange and offer opportunities for emerging and established artists to network, research and create career-defining exhibitions. 

Spanning from the 20th century up to the present day, our exhibition program aims specifically, but not exclusively, to provide a global perspective on Central and East European art and culture. Our goal is to contribute to international recognition and greater visibility of the artists from this part of Europe. 
 

eastcontemporary’s program notion circles around the idea of the invisible threshold of the West and the East, which can be otherwise seen as the West and non-West. Since our goal is to understand, question and negotiate the ideologies and connotations associated with cultural constructs, especially those noted in the European area, we particularly encourage artistic practices that expand discourses around perceived dichotomies, contemporary disorientation and our capacity of adaptation in transnational and globalized times. Through the reassessment of the past, the present and the future, our program aims to stimulate critical consciousness and the understanding of the multi-layered worldviews.

The cross-national and cultural collaboration is inscribed in our mission. Despite its Central and East European-focused subject matter, which we aim to bring, physically and theoretically, closer to the mainstream Western narrative, eastcontemporary is not an attempt to reorient the gaze towards this subject only, but rather to create a tangible bridge between Eastern and Western artistic communities.

Each exhibition is accompanied by curatorial talks, lectures, workshops, publications, film screenings or other curated events, which aim to actively engage the local community in the process of critical thinking. Our mission is to build shared platforms, where the artists and the public can reflect on and discuss both the artistic practices and the key social, political, economic and environmental issues of our time.
