Liping Ting’s decelerated performances convey the impression that one is witnessing a shamanistic ritual. She herself constitutes the focal point of her work, and, employing self-styled iconography (among which the stone and feather are consistently recurring motifs), she adopts the role of a spiritual medium, who enables the beholders to become active participants. The process of dialogical sensory perception that ensues, either through touch or synchronised breathing, gives rise to a basal, physical inter-subjectivity. The artist, who studied Philosophy in Taipei and Theatre in Paris, adeptly correlates the questions of ‘Self without the Self’ and ‘Unlocking the Ego’ in an intensely sensual experience. In Ting’s work, identity is, to be sure, experienced through the physical form. Ting formulates, through her own physicality, a relationship to the surroundings of the observer. Her movements incorporate elements of traditional Chinese dance and are as ecstatic at times as they are minimal at others. Yet in certain moments, such as those in which she impressively balances the branch of a tree upon her head, one begins to intuit how much discipline her synthesis of body and spirit in fact demands.

The performance Yuan Fang 遠方 (Engl. distant) takes place at the gallery and in front of the window front at Rathausvorplatz.

In Liping Tings entschleunigten Performances entsteht das Gefühl, einem schamanischen Ritual beizuwohnen. Sie selbst steht dabei im Zentrum und ist mit ihrer eigenen Ikonografie – zu der die immer wieder auftauchenden Attribute Stein und Feder gehören – das spirituelle Medium, das aus dem Publikum aktiv partizipierende Teilnehmer*innen macht. Dies geschieht mittels dialogischer Sinneserfahrungen – ausgelöst etwa durch Berührungen oder synchrone Atempraktiken –, wodurch eine basale körperliche Intersubjektivität entsteht. Die Künstlerin, die in Taipeh Philosophie und in Paris Theaterwissenschaften studierte, bindet die Fragen über ein »Selbst ohne das Selbst« über ein »Lösen des Egos« an eine intensive Erfahrung der Sinne. Ting formuliert aus ihrer eigenen Leiblichkeit heraus eine Beziehung zum Umfeld der Zuschauer*innen. Ihre Bewegungen enthalten Elemente aus der chinesischen Tanztradition, sind mal ekstatisch, mal minimal und gerade in den Momenten, in denen sie einen Ast eindrucksvoll auf dem Kopf balanciert, erahnt man, wie viel Disziplin ihre Synthese von Körper und Geist abverlangt: Ting meditiert sieben Stunden, bevor sie eine Stunde performt – sie muss ganz bei sich sein, bevor sie sich öffnen kann.
