Participants will be presented with a set of problems and encouraged to consider the social impact of their design’s approach, whilst adopting methods used in the Peconheiros project that the designers worked on in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.

About

The designers, together with the local fruit pickers, developed prototypes for tools and accessories to improve safety and comfort while climbing and harvesting the açaí palm trees. The project will be exhibited at London College of Communication in the form of a film Academia da Floresta, showing the wider context of issues faced by the local community and the cultural significance of the work of the açaí berry pickers.

The workshop is open to the public and LCC students with an interest in socially-responsible design. The participants will engage in research, idea development, design and prototyping activities. The workshop will run over two consecutive days and will be delivered by Peconheiros team:

  • Monika Brauntsch: The Spirit of Poland

  • Dorota Kabala: We Design For Physical Culture

  • Carolina Menezes: The Spirit of Poland (guest designer)

This event is part of EMERGENCE, an exhibition and events programme presented by the Design School at London College of Communication, UAL exploring the role of design in working towards goals of sustainable production and consumption, biodiversity, inclusiveness, social cohesion and environmental sustainability.
