Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was one of the foremost British artists of the 20th century. Sea, Rock, Earth and Ice celebrates her gift for capturing the spirit of the world’s wildest landscapes.

About

The exhibition brings together paintings and works on paper spanning four decades, illustrating how Barns-Graham developed her own abstract language informed by both international and local artistic influences.

The works on display are underpinned by an inherent understanding of the natural world and showcase Barns-Graham’s extraordinary ability to evoke a landscape in gradual flux, from eroding coastlines and volcanic vistas to the unseen slow creep of a glacier.

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was a leading member of the St Ives School of artists who contributed to the advancement of British Abstract Art in the 20th Century. She spent 1956-1958 living in Leeds and working across Yorkshire, a period that proved highly significant to her life and career. Sea, Rock, Earth and Ice is one of a series of exhibitions and events across Yorkshire from 2018 to 2019 in tribute to her connection with the region.
