An artist talks from personal experience about claiming copyright infringement, when his artworks were being exploited by another artist. In this talk he shares remedies you can take should this happen to you.

About

What to do if you get copied:
The murky world of Intellectual Property & Copyright infringement a personal artist experience by ViNNi KiNiKi

About the talk

It came as a shock when ViNNi saw his work appearing in an online exhibition he was participating in, a shock because those weren’t works that he had submitted, and the artist name attached to the art wasn’t his either.

Concerned and surprised, ViNNi looked up the artist’s name, followed the traces back to the artist's website and social media and found his artworks were being exploited without his knowledge or consent. The copycat artist used his artwork images as their own and had even begun merchandising his designs, and gaining awards and media attention…

What do you do when you have limited resources around you and how do you fight to protect your own work?

In this talk ViNNi shares his strange personal experience and slightly odd journey of fighting to claim his ownership over his own work - from the beginning of approaching the legal support to the final settlement.

He will also share all the credible organisations and free resources to go to in order to help protect your work.

About the speaker

ViNNi is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in a variety of mediums and formats; best known for creating large-scale brightly coloured black-light murals. He also works in digital media and print, and more recently has ventured into the world of NFTs.  His art covers an ever-expanding series of topics such as; aliens, science fiction, body modification, artificial intelligence, zen philosophy, ancient symbology, conspiracy theory, fetish, gender, altered states, genetic modification, occult and esoteric knowledge.

In his live shows and exhibitions ViNNi utilises black light and projection mapping in order to evoke a surreal ambience and trigger a sense of otherworldly curiosity and wonder, in order to temporarily transport the audience to another dimension, a place where everything is structurally the same yet looks and feels completely different.
