The show consists of a series of sixteen sculptures standing solidly in space, unified by a common geometry. The modular forms, stained black, are the product of traditional woodworking combined with Brutalist architectural influences. Constructed from English oak and finsihed with blakc pigment and wax, the joins in the sculptures suggest a previous function and narrative.
The work describes the point at which building becomes culture. The act of construction is imbued with meaning that can be read and interpreted; new narratives created from old myths. The grain of the oak is held within these minimal forms, creating tension as the viewer moves amongst them. The unusual exhibition space of Peckham Asylum compliments the work and adds to the sculptures splendor and intrigue. They have been stained with black pigment creating an oily hard surface, furthering their industrial quality.
BASK, graduated from the University of the Arts London in 2012, and have since completed exhibitions in London, the Isle of Wight, Florence and Milan as well as a permanent public installation in Edinburgh. Their individual practices overlap to create a combined focus on removing architectural components and industrial objects from their practical context and presenting them as fragments with their own ontology.
