We usher 2016 in with a light installation by Newport based artist Victoria J E Jones, exploring the tipping point between feeling safe and unsafe.

About

Arcade Cardiff presents a new work by Victoria J E Jones, ‘What It Is Rite’. This work is building on Jones’ previous works creating empathic and uplifting experiences. She is interested in ‘sense of place’ and ‘other spaces’. Sense of place is the emotional attachment people have to locations. Other spaces are locations where people behave differently unlike everyday situations like being at home.

Past works by the artist include ‘Celestial Cluster’ (2014), in which the audience and the artist made a ‘Milky Way’ of LED lights whilst swapping personal stories of separation and reunion and Milky Way chocolate bars. In ‘Polar Exploration’ (2013) Jones created a multi-sensorial rendering of the polar experience as she imagined it, filled with light and smelling and tasting of mint. It was intended as an ‘other’ space of contemplation for some, of play for others.

In common with these past works, ‘What It Is Rite’ will explore the human condition and the fragility of human relationships. In particular the tipping point between feeling safe and unsafe. Safe and unsafe ‘spaces’ can be found in our every day experiences. A physical location, a word or a gesture can delineate the transition from feeling safe to unsafe and back again. These ideas will be explored through a light installation, an audio work and a dance performance.

Victoria J E Jones (b.1969) lives and works in Newport, UK. She graduated from Camberwell School of Art in 1992, with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art. Since then she has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally. Currently she is commissioned to make a work with local traders in the Maindee area of Newport by Maindee Unlimited. In 2016 her work ‘Smell The City’ (2013) will feature in ‘Creating with Smell’ a title published by Routledge.

Mae Arcade Cardiff yn cyflwyno gwaith newydd gan Victoria J E Jones, 'What It Is Rite'. Mae'n waith sy'n creu profiad empathig a dyrchafol sy'n deillio o waith blaenorol yr artist. Mae diddordeb ganddi mewn 'ymdeimlad o le' (sense of space) a 'llefydd eraill' (other spaces). 'Ymdeimlad o le' yw'r attodiad emosiynol sydd gennym at leoliadiadau. 'Llefydd eraill'  yw'r lleoliadau lle mae pobl yn ymddwyn yn wahanol, yn anhebyg i sefyllfaoedd fel bod adre.

Mae gwaith blaenorol yr artist yn cynnwys 'Celestial Cluster' (2014) a 'Polar Exploration' (2013). Yn Celestial Cluster gwelir yr artist a'r gynulleidfa'n creu 'Llwybr Llaethog' o oliadau LED tra'n rhannu storiau personol o wahanu ac aduno a bariau siocled Milky Way. Bwriadwyd 'Polar Exploration' i fod yn le o synfyfyrdod i rhai, a gofod chwarae i eraill. Yn y gofod, creuwyd Jones cyflwyniad aml-synhwyraidd am y profiad pegynol fel y gwelir yn ei dychymyg, llawn golau ac yn arlogli a blasu fel mint.

Fel ei gwaith yn y gorfennol, mae 'What It Is Rite' yn archwilio'r cyflwyr dynol ac eiddilwch perthnasau dynol. Yn benodol, y trobwynt rhwng teimlo'n ddiolgel ac anniolgel. Fedrwch ddargnfod gofodau diolgel ac anniogel yn ein profiadau dydd i ddydd. Mae lleoliad corfforol, gair neu ystum yn gallu amlinellu'r trawsnewidiad  o deimlo'n ddiogel i anniogel ac yn ol eto. Bydd y syniadau yma yn cael eu archwilio drwy osodiad golau, gwaith sain a phefformiad dawns.

Yn byw a gweithio yng Nghasnewydd, DU. Fe raddiodd Victoria J E Jones (g.1969) gyda gradd BA (Anrh) yn Celf Gain o Camberwell School of Art yn 1992. Ers hynny mae hi wedi arddangos yn genedlaethol a thu hwnt. Ar hyn o bryd mae hi wedi cael ei phenodi gan yr elusen Maindee Unlimited i greu gwaith gyda masnachwyr lleol yn ardal Maendy yng Nghasnewydd. Yn 2016 bydd ei gwaith 'Smell The City' (2013) yn rhan o 'Creating With Smell', teitl a chyhoeddwyd gan Routledge.
