About

In her work already shown in London, Karen Stuke is responding to W.G. Sebald’s novel “Austerlitz”. It tells the story of Jacques Austerlitz and is one of the most haunting reflections in literature on time, loss and retrieval.
The architectural historian, who was sent to England on a children’s transport at the age of five, was placed with foster parents in Wales. As he struggles to rediscovers his past, Austerlitz embarks on a journey through time and space, from the mid-20th century to today’s England.

Karen Stuke followed this journey with her pinhole camera. She captures the places of the Austerlitz story in her own way: Fleeting images created by traces of light evoke blurred, moving and multi-layered memories full of atmospheric density.

The exhibition is an immersive installation of large-format images, light and sound specially conceived for the site of the Kommunale Galerie Berlin.

The exhibition is presented under the patronage of the British Ambassador to Berlin Sir Sebastian Wood.
It is a cooperation of The Wapping Project, London and PhotoWerkBerlin.
