Programme 1 is led by revered multi-media artist Tina Keane, whose work and teaching has had a profound influence on the development of digital art.

About

Alongside three of Keane’s own works – Deviant Beauty (1996) and Couch (2003, neon and film) – the programme’s works will explore the body, feminism, obsession and the search for identity, probing themes for which Keane’s pioneering films laid the groundwork. The selection includes moving image and digital installation, showcasing some of the most arresting, clever and quietly provocative works commenting on gender today.

Keane studied at Hammersmith College of Art and Sir John Cass School of Art (1967–70) and received an MA in Independent Film and Video from London College of Printing (1995–96). Keane was a founding member of non-profit women’s film distribution organisation Circles - Women in Distribution and her influence on successive generations of artists has been great, namely through her teaching at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design on Film and Video. Keane’s 1978 work She, presented at the Hayward Gallery, London, was an early example of performance to include both live video and slide projections, and her 2003 work Couch – a neon and film, both of which will be showing for Visions – explores an earlier performance that was one of the first to utilise the internet. Her work is presented at Nunnery Gallery in partnership with England & Co Gallery.
