Vincent James: Artist in Residence

For his Exploring PAPER Residency, Vincent will use paper cut-outs and stop-motion animation to create site-specific projected installations. Vincent will explore the potential of paper as a screen for projected animation. Cut-out paper shapes will be animated, and back-projected through a screen or collaged objects attached to a wall. Vincent intends to create stop-motion films that spill, fly or explode out of the studio. The studio and surroundings of PAPER would be a key element in this process as Vincent creates work to animate specific architectural features and windows of the space.
 
Every Saturday during the residency period, from 11am to 5pm, Vincent will open the studio to the public and allow them to see how his ideas are progressing and learn more about his work. The public can learn stop motion techniques and help Vincent expand the interactive environment of the studio.

Vincent draws from an ever-expanding catalogue of objects appropriated from cartoons. He would give these objects the opportunity to explore, experiment, and animate the spaces of PAPER; bringing to life what may have been previously overlooked corners or features of the space.

After completing his MA at Goldsmiths in 1999, Vincent James has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work is part of the Touchstones Art Gallery Permanent Collection, and Frederick R Weisman Art Foundation Collection, California. And visitors to Bury’s Light Night over the last three years will remember his site-specific installations projected onto empty shop windows.
 
In January 2016, Vincent will present a new body of work developed from his residency at PAPER. This exhibition will be the culmination of his exploration into paper.
