This exhibition showcases the work of BA (Hons) Film Production (BAFP) students, from the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) at the University of Portsmouth.

About

The posters on display in the Freda Swain room on the first floor of Portsmouth Guildhall were produced as part of the BAFP students' Graduation work. Bringing together the skills and technical training gained during their three-year course, final year students write, produce, film and edit ambitious 15-20 minute short films. The shorts are collaborative works produced using industry-standard equipment under working conditions that replicate real-world professional practices.

Students also develop marketing packages to promote their films. These include trailers, press packs and the impressive professional-standard posters on display here. Produced using the latest imaging and graphics software, often in collaboration with Portsmouth Art and Design students, the artwork encapsulates the breadth, depth and creative ambition of the films – drama, documentary, comedy, horror – all produced from original scripts and self-funded using every available technique from social media campaigns to crowdfunding.

All films are shot on location, sometimes in the heart of Hampshire, sometimes as far afield as Scotland, Sweden, Bulgaria and China. The behind the scenes images reveal the teamwork and effort necessary to produce a professional standard film.

Many films by our final year students have gone on to win awards for technical excellence and have gained success in film festivals at home in the UK and abroad. The industry-acknowledged quality of BAFP productions is a testament to the creative vision, dedication and passion of our student teams. Their films are calling cards that open doors for our graduates, who go on to work in feature films, television and all other areas of the screen industries.

While the posters and behind the scenes photographs can only capture a glimpse of the wonderfully entertaining films they represent, you can see the actual work of our Film Production students in the CCI Faculty’s end of year Graduation show, in June each year.  The next show is Friday 5 June 2020, 5-9pm.

This show is part of an ongoing collaborative exhibition programme hosted by the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries and Portsmouth Cultural Trust to enrich the visual and cultural experience of visitors to the Guildhall.  The aim is to offer students and alumni an opportunity to exhibit their work to a broad public audience, developing their professional creative practice.
