Two Lives in Colour honours an exceptional artistic legacy, which in 2019 celebrates some important milestones. East GalleryNUA are delighted to present a body of work by Fred Dubery and Joanne Brogden alongside those talented students of NUA who have benefitted from the scholarship programme.
About
Through the generosity of artists Fred Dubery and Joanne Brogden, the East Anglia Art Fund (EAAF) provides annual scholarships at Norwich University of the Arts.
The Fred Dubery Scholarship for students studying BA (Hons) Fine Art, MA Fine Art or BA (Hons) Illustration and the Joanne Brogden scholarship for students of BA (Hons) Fashion, MA Fashion, BA (Hons) Textile Design or MA Textile Design.
Founded in 2016, this is the first year of a full cohort of scholarship students, from first year, undergraduate to MA. This year also sees the publication by Unicorn Press of the book of the same name, Two Lives in Colour, by writer and curator Ian Collins.

About Fred Dubery
Fred Dubery (1926 – 2011) was known as a painters’ painter, admired for his exuberant colour and quiet domestic interiors. A member of the New English Art Club from 1956, Dubery trained at Croydon School of Art from 1949 to 1950 and then at the Royal College of Art. Teaching at Walthamstow School of Art in 1960 he met Joanne Brogden and they married 5 years later. Dubery loved to teach. He was Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy Schools and a part-time senior lecturer at the Royal College of Art until 1989.
About Joanne Brogden
Designer and sculptor Joanne Brogden (1929 – 2013) was similarly committed to teaching and was Professor of Fashion at the Royal College of Art, where she had studied in the early years of the foundation of the course. She also trained in Paris under Christian Dior and alongside Yves Saint Laurent.
A force in the development of fashion design education, Brogden’s students included Luigi Maramotti of Max Mara and Betty Jackson. Brogden retired from the RCA in 1999 to focus on her figurative sculpture.
After their marriage Fred and Joanne moved from London to Suffolk, settling in Great Finborough near Stowmarket in 1968, where they were based for the rest of their lives.
