Video documentation of the process of embroidering tiny multicolor dots on Khadi (hand spun cotton). This video/performance is part of Maiden LA 2020.
About
Handwork like embroidery has been the means of educating women into the feminine ideal but at the same time it provides them with a set of skills that can be used for self empowerment. Aggarwal’s work references a range of feminist concerns like the elevation of the domestic arts, the dismantling of gendered hierarchies of art and craft, and the dignifying of historically feminized labor.Craft is an important part of our lives and economy but it’s makers remain invisible. Craftspeople in India are experiencing extreme stress on their professions due to the prolonged lock down imposed by the Indian government to curb the spread of COVID-19. They are concerned about the future of Indian craft and handmade.
Through the documentation of the process of embroidering dots on Khadi, Aggarwal wants to draw attention to the human element in craft thereby highlighting the importance of supporting local craft and handmade.
