About

TRAILER PROMO DEMO TEASER
18 March 2017

A simulation by Marcel Darienzo

Opening times: 6 - 9 pm

The possibility of sugar-coating our plugged in, logged on and overcommitted lives with the promise of a relationship is present everywhere and we find ourselves singing along:

“What do you do fighting for your life
And no one's on your side, yeah, baby
Can't stand to lose you, see you're in too deep
And know nowhere to hide”

(Chris Brown, ‘What Would You Do?’)

Relationships have been institutionalized and are used as business and entertainment. They allow contemporary society to disguise the increased sense of isolation and loneliness that results from a daily life under neoliberalism. Capitalism captures, contains and uses emotional connections that we consume, not only through pop culture but also ephemeral interchangeable materials such as emojis, Facebook likes and Tinder matches.

TRAILER PROMO DEMO TEASER is a simulation that overlays painting, installation, graffiti, sound and performance. It attempts to produce an environment that is constantly autoreflexive and fulfilled with the viewers past, present and future experiences.

Join the artist in his exploration of contemporary nihilistic desire.

TRAILER PROMO DEMO TEASER is curated by Luís Manuel Araújo and
is part of 'Better Together', a curatorial research project initiated by eight independent curators on the MFA Curating course at Goldsmiths University of London.

This event is suitable only for 15 years and over.

Marcel (marceldarienzo.com) is a London based artist, working and researching in visual art, performance, dance and theatre. His propositions investigate the body experience inside and out the art context. His recent work explores how institutions operate symbolically in their ways of affirming power through architectural spaces, language, and visual communication. He attempts to do so by deleting all content from his works, to be fulfilled with the viewers life experiences and desires. Recent shows, performances and publications include: Performance is moving the gallery, ICA Bulletin, London; Manifesta 11 Cabaret der Kunstler, Zurich - CH; Some vibrant impotence going on, Goldsmiths Gallery, London; I am not Tino Sehgal Catalogue, Nahmad Projects, London; Polluted&rearranged&[…], Hartslane Gallery, London; In[LAR], Instituto da Laringe, São Paulo - BR; das capitanias do seu corpo, Museum of Brasilian Art, São Paulo - BR.

Luís is a member of the curatorial collective ANGL and works at the contemporary art gallery greengrassi. His academic background spans architecture, urban studies and curating, having developed conceptual projects that fed from his research on utopias and manifestos. His current interests revolve around commodity aesthetics and expressions of the self in contemporary culture. Recent curatorial projects include 'A Place For You To Dream' (February 2017) with Max Colson, Katy Connor, Felicity Hammond and Laura Yuile at the Gallery at Republic, London; and ‘Dis locate’ (May-June 2016), a collaboration between Magdalen Road Studios and Wadham College, University of Oxford.
