Developed over the last year, the expanding collection of paintings are created using a collagic approach of gathering subject matter. Sketches of local and wider London life, periodic stills of the seasonal skylines over N15, live sittings with friends & the local community in transition, all morph into unique compositions. The results in this body of work are fascinating and dreamlike conjuring visions of humanity in a state of flux - uncertain and anticipatory in equal measure.
Also being presented, are what Summers describes as “relics” of the studio process. These intriguing recycled pieces, all used initially as temporary palettes, retain an antiquitous quality. Now numerous, they have become a collection of living, breathing maps for the paintings, whilst taking on a life of their own.
The inspiration ultimately stems from being immersed in both a dynamic visual practice and the association of music. After graduating from the Slade School of Art in painting, Ben channelled energy into DJing, whilst working as a co promoter for 6 years - playing in London’s landmark nightlife institutions and being immersing in club culture. This foundation has always provided somewhat of an orbit, whilst navigating the art world and the inherent political discourse around producing work which is reflective of the times. It is evident in these latest paintings, that the age old passtime of observing people is still an important starting point for developing work. The paintings in “This Way For The Future” are quietly subversive, placing the viewer right in and amongst the story and it’s associated characters.
The show runs from October 1st - November 2nd and will include a pre-sale of selected works, closing event, artist panel discussion and workshop - to be announced in due course.
