The Wild Geese Call Exhibition Dives Deep into the Wounds of Collective Trauma, Introspection and What it Means to be Connected to the Natural World.

About

The show brings together the work of five artists, each of whose practice draws, consciously or unconsciously, on the principles of eco-somatics. Ecosomatics connects psychology and the healing arts with ecological consciousness. Through awareness of one’s body in the natural environment, and as the natural environment, we can bridge the separation between mind, body and earth. Showcasing work made throughout and post-pandemic, each artist engages with a universal visual language in order to reflect an approach to healing that is at once personal and collective.

The title takes its inspiration from a poem by Mary Olivier, ‘The Wild Geese’, in which we are reminded that life is not an individualist struggle; that if we dissolve the illusion of separateness and let the ‘soft animal of our body love what it loves’, we will effortlessly find our place ‘in the family of things.’

‘The Wild Geese Call’ is about progress, celebration, hope: a small step in what needs to be a collective stride towards a more ecologically conscious lived experience where we feel more a part of, rather than apart from, nature.

Exhibiting Artists:

Beatrice Hasell-McCosh ( @beatricehasellmccosh )

Beatrice‘s work uses natural form and the tradition of landscape painting as the lens to explore emotional themes, identity linked to place and human connection. Beatrice’s recent work is a series of diptychs, triptychs and monumental paintings around the theme of separation and emotions associated with enforced isolation. During such a period of uncertainty, painting in large scale worked as a therapeutic physical act of choosing bigness rather than big things becoming overwhelming.

Beatrice studied English and Classics at Leeds University and then spent two years studying at Leith School of Art and The Royal Drawing School. Her work is in private collections around the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA.

Harriet Gillett ( @harrietgillettart )

Harriet is a London-based painter and printmaker whose work playfully circulates around themes of identity, surveillance and our relationship with myths and nature. In her work she brings together seemingly juxtaposing materials or subject matters to show unexpected links between things, such as layering organic oil over acidic spray paint, or melding watercolour pigment for a resulting fluidity.

Harriet holds a BA in English Literature from Edinburgh University. Since graduating with a Graduate Diploma in Fine Art from City and Guilds last year she has exhibited across London, including Blue Shop Cottage and All-mouth Gallery. She was recently shortlisted for the Ingram prize.

Henry Glover ( @hgglover )

Henry is a London-based painter and ceramicist whose work focuses on the interplay between physical sensations of the materials used and the raw emotions of the artist’s personal relationships. He is currently concerned with revealing shared feelings around the common introspection we have experienced during the pandemic.

Glover won the Saatchi ‘Rising Star’ award in 2020, naming him as one of the top 35 artists around the world under 35 years old.  Glover graduated from Wimbledon College of Arts in June 2020 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting, and has had a number of group and solo shows since.

Georgie Mason ( @georgiesmason )

Georgie Mason creates contemporary mixed media landscapes that feel both recognisable and metaphorical.  Her work is concerned with interconnectedness and dissolving the illusion of separateness. Her process is intuitive and visceral: organic elements from her surroundings coexist in her work alongside manmade materials, raising questions around the relationship between man, nature and art.

Since graduating with a dregree in English Literature and Art History from Nottingham University, Georgie has exhibited internationally including at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Affordable Art Fairs, and the Museum of Goa in India.  This is her first group curation.

Charlotte J Ward ( @charlotte.jward )

Ward graduated from the London College of Communication in 2014, with a Photography BA (Hons). Since March 2020, she has moved towards self-portrait photography, placing her practice at the crossroads between embodied movement, activism and fine art photography.

Ward has been part of a number of solo and group shows, most recently Corona Culture in Berlin and Mind’s Eye in Dorset. Her work has been featured in publications including 'Portrait of Humanity Vol.3' book by The British Journal of Photography.
