London is in a constant state of change: its buildings seem permanent and immovable but all will eventually vanish. It is this transience that Luke M. Walker aims to examine in this exhibition, a celebration of the making and unmaking of the city.

About

As a painter and walking artist who has spent much of the last ten years exploring the streets of London, Luke is regularly drawn to construction sites, documenting these markers of change before, during and after their transformation. The sites are linked through a series of walks, Datascapes, in which he maps his progress through the city: pace, speed, number of steps.
These become physical representations of the momentary act of walking itself.

His relationship with the landscape has recently changed and what once might have been described as an homage to the urban environment has now become more adversarial, with each body of work questioning the value of human activity. The artist becomes a witness expressing this interaction and change, particularly but not exclusively through painting.

From a lofty position on some of the city’s highest landmarks, from Vauxhall, to St Pauls, to The Sky Gardens, Luke paints the fluid nature of the city as it morphs its way along the Thames like the turning of the tides.

Luke M. Walker is based in London, where he regularly paints and exhibits his works, alongside lecturing in Art and Design and practicing as an interior and spatial designer.
Luke completed an MA in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School and he was the winner of the Signature Art Prize for Painting in 2015.
