When Vasiliy Sumin was forced to leave Russia, he took only a few belongings and a dog with him. In his presentation, the artist explores the effects of war and migration with artificial intelligence.
About
During his residency as a guest artist at the ZKM | Karlsruhe in 2022, Vasiliy Sumin began to collect historical facts, soundscapes, and personal psychological notes, while simultaneously processing his experiences with reprisals. His dog and a neural network model played a special role during this time. He also provided humanitarian aid to Ukrainian war victims by building horizontal communities.
Sumin's exploration of spaces in which real and imagined trauma are created and endlessly relived motivated him to explore artistic tools of coping and healing. The exhibition unfolds in three interconnected parts that revolve around this search:
"Resistance" consists of a video that explores Germany through various video recordings. Footage captured by a camera on a dog's body is combined with archival footage and personal images of the artist that have been distorted and reinterpreted by an artificial intelligence.
"Testimonies" includes several sculptures made of various artifacts created and collected by the artist. They show the journey of the three entities - human, dog and neural network - and are a tribute to all the victims of war.
Through dialogues with the neural network model as a psychological tool, in "Healing" the artist explores the nature of the subject and becomes himself an object of research and mutual influence.
