This one-day course will introduce you to the key factors contributing to the deterioration of paper-based cultural artefacts such as prints, drawings and photographs.

About

Suitable for anyone with an interest in conservation, seeking an introduction into the area of conservation for paper-based collections and cultural artefacts including: books, prints, drawings and photographs.  Perhaps you are looking for a short taster before pursuing a career or qualification in conservation.

Demonstrations and a short practical exercise will allow you to get hands on in your exploration of this subject and technical examination of paper artefacts.

You will have gained an insight into the area of paper conservation. You will have begun to understand the ways in which works of art and archival documents on paper can become damaged with time, over exposure to light, humidity and other elements, as well as learning about some techniques for dealing with certain types of damage. You will acquire an awareness of preventive conservation processes and techniques that in the context of handling works on paper will help to prevent damage.
