About

'The New York School' narrated by Barbara Rose, Michael Blackwood Productions, 1972 American art came of age with a group of New York painters who became known as Abstract Expressionists. Struggling to break out of European styles, they aimed instead to express their own transcendental values that emphasised freedom, impulse, and instinct, favouring large-scale canvases with improvisational brushwork. Harold Rosenberg, author of the phrase action painting," and fellow critic Clement Greenberg offer their insights on the period.
