Directly inspired by Goya, the Chapmans created a series of 83 etchings titled Disasters of War (1999) taking many of Goya’s motifs and impose childish and humoristic interventions, add contemporary symbols of violence, and make surrealistic incursions while also adding freestanding compositions.
About
British artists Jake and Dinos Chapman—often referred to as the Chapman brothers—have worked together since the early 1990s. Their drawings, sculptures and films, which often combine scenes of violence with absurd and humorous elements, effectively comment on society, politics and religion. They are interested in the representation of that which is impossible to reproduce, and in putting the viewer in a state of complete moral panic by exploring the relationship between humor and horror.
A generous loan from Sweden’s Nationalmuseum will be the centerpiece of the exhibition, allowing us to place 20 plates from Goya’s original 1863 edition in direct dialogue with additional works by the Chapman brothers.
