About

Creative protest workshop with ‘BP or Not BP?’

Founded in 2012, 'BP or not BP?' is now a well-known and much-loved “actor-vist” theatre company that creates audacious protest performances to oppose the sponsorship of iconic cultural institutions by destructive oil companies, such as BP and Shell. The group has now held almost fifty unsanctioned performances in oil-sponsored spaces, from taking the stage before BP-branded plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, to hosting large-scale flashmobs with hundreds of participants at the BP-sponsored British Museum. Their performances have involved Shakespearean tales exposing the reality of BP's impacts around the world, a Viking-themed "flash-horde" which included its own specially designed longboat, and an underwater-themed "splash-mob" with a 40-foot sea monster puppet that was smuggled inside the British Museum’s Great Court.

This workshop will be an opportunity to hear about the group, its performances and how it is shifting the conversation on culture and climate change. There'll be an opportunity to have a go at creating your own performance protests as well as joining in with some singing and performing.
