Throughout history, artists have looked to boats and the sea as subject matter, sometimes romantically, yet often addressing issues around migration, loss, absence, struggle and hope.
About
Today, the subjects seem particularly relevant as images of migrants, attempting to cross into relative safety of Europe, flash across our TV screens.
The exhibition features a newly commissioned film work by Pakinstani artist Fazal Rizvi, which explores multiple narratives around the sea, shifting between fiction and reality. This work is shown alongside both contemporary and historic works from the British Council Collection and The New Art Gallery Walsall's collections. Artists include Eric Ravilious, Williams Scott, Sarah Taylor Silverwood, Dayanita Singh and Bob and Roberta Smith.
This exhibition is curated by Aziz Sohail, a curator from Pakistan, who spent three weeks at the Gallery on a curatorial development residency supported by the British Council.
