About

TALK DESCRIPTION
This talk is about the power and importance of the humble sketchbook, looking at reportage, journaling and drawing. Sketchbooks are a window into the artist's mind and soul. They are useful drawing tools as well as time capsules and journals for thoughts, plans, ideas and designs. Within them we find a particular style of drawing - often different to the finished works we see on gallery walls. They are scrappy, instinctive and unsure, which can make them all the more fascinating.

Join Molly as she investigates the importance and beauty of the artist's sketchbook through looking at key examples. Taking you on a journey, she will look at the reportage sketchbook pages of Cezanne and Delacoix; the diagrammatic notes of Hilma Af Klint; and the delicate studies of Lucian Freud. Molly will also discuss her own sketchbooks, how her use of them has changed, and how they have remained as important guides throughout her career.

Guest Series Format: Our series of talks and workshops are given by leading professionals across different fields who draw as a part of their work and life. In the Summer our guests will be discussing drawing in relation to murals, art, architecture, and satirical portraiture. These workshops are a unique chance to understand drawing from different disciplines - working hands on within a small group led by inspirational drawers.
