"The Gift of a Skort" is a solo exhibition by young London-based artist Joy Miessi, displaying a brand new series of paintings, along with drawings on paper, and three limited edition screenprints.
About
"The Gift of a Skort" is an exhibition by artist Joy Miessi, interpreting the theme of gender through a deeply personal lens. As with much of the artist’s work, moments and memories are captured in abstract figures and written musings.
The skort (neither wholly a skirt or pair of shorts) works as a metaphor, as Miessi sensitively examines the nuances of gender. The fluidity of the theme allows Miessi to explore a broad landscape of identities, with ideas of invisibility, dysphoria and discomfort prevalent throughout.
The exhibition includes three limited edition screen prints, produced by Atom Printing, as well as canvas and paper works by the artist.
“... the intent of this series of work is to create a self reflection of my experiences with gender. It also works to explore the power of liberation through clothing, as well as the limitations of the freedom it provides.”
