Work by Fred Yates and Derek Holland, two very different British artists connected through their love for France
About
THE FRENCH CONNECTION 2019
France has long provided inspiration and spiritual refuge for English artists, disillusioned by the humdrum of English life, the awful weather and often bleak countryside. In France, it seemed, there was an abundance of colour, an air of excitement, a promise of coming alive.
In this exhibition we have two very different artists who are connected through their love of France. Fred Yates and Derek Holland, who knew each other through the Newlyn Society, St Ives and New Street Gallery, Plymouth were both restless spirits who were tiring of the demands of commercial success placed on them by their London galleries. Independently, they each discovered the delights of a more relaxed way of life offered across the Channel and in their later years they each spent a great deal of time living and painting in the rural towns and villages of Brittany and Provence.
