About

Proud Chelsea is delighted to present The Factory: Warhol and His Circle by David Mc Cabe; a photographic memoir of a year at the Factory and beyond to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Edie Sedgwick's death. This exhibition features stunning portraits of Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick and their inner circle at the legendary Factory as it rose to prominence. David Mc Cabe was a rising star on the New York photography scene when he was contacted by Warhol and asked to collaborate with him in documenting life at the Factory between 1964 and 1965. David was approached by Warhol on two conditions: that he didn't use a flash and that he was someone who would fit in; David became part of the Factory's entourage and took over 2,500 photographs at the Factory and other locations around New York, capturing a pivotal moment in art history. Documenting Warhol creating his work in the Factory, going with him to parties where he charmed the collectors in to buying his work and meeting other artists such as Dali and Rauschenberg; Mc Cabe's wonderfully evocative photographs give us unprecedented access to Warhol and the stars of the Factory. Artefacts of a bygone age, these photographs are an inimitable record of a cultural icon in the process of inventing himself. Upon inspection, Warhol decided the majority of photographs taken of him did not portray him in a light he was keen to cultivate so Mc Cabe put them away and left these unique photographs untouched, many of them unprinted, for nearly forty years. Exhibited at Proud Chelsea this October, we are delighted to present David Mc Cabe's first UK exhibition: this exceptional collection presents an unparalleled insight in to the crazy world of the Factory ; Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick and all the other eccentrics and luminaries that passed through its doors.
