Renowned for the clarity and simplicity of his limestone carvings, artist Dieter Kraenzlein reduces the severity of stone to an incredible lightness, testing the very limits of material and technique.
About
For this exhibition Kraezlein has mainly chosen stone from Steinbruchen in Moos near Wurzburg and Rielingshausen, a region famous for limestone with an especially complex surface structure similar to that of Coquina. He manipulates this rare material with considerable dexterity to produce sail-like works that appear to rise up weightlessly, as if stone could simply be carried away by the wind, as light and flexible as canvas: the thin, narrow shape and multifaceted surfaces inviting viewers to move around in search of the constantly evolving images found at every new angle.
