An exhibition which draws us into the head that sleeps, through a series of experimental monoprints produced by artist Susan Aldworth in preparation for The Dark Self - a large exhibition and installation at York St Mary's Church, a York Museums Trust venue.
About
This intriguing exhibition of exquisitely detailed, wonderfully mysterious and often ethereal works shows Aldworth's working practice at its most experimental and beautiful.
Susan has been Artist in Residence at the University of York for three years working on an interdisciplinary project with Professor Miles Whittington, Chair in Neuroscience and more recently Professor Michael White, Head of the Department of Art History. Professor Whittington and his team are working on a Wellcome Trust grant carrying out research into what happens within the brain during deep sleep - a time when the our brain renders us unconscious. For Susan, this poses a philosophical conundrum. “If our brains can make the ‘self’ unconscious, then what is the relationship between the brain and our sense of self?” The exhibition The Dark Self is the result of Aldworth’s artistic questioning and the work in this exhibition, The Art of Sleep, offers exploratory work produced during this period of research.

Susan Aldworth is an artist interested in questions of human identity. She is an experimental printmaker and filmmaker referencing philosophy, medicine, and neuroscience in her work. Aldworth has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally and her work is held in many public and permanent collections including the V&A, British Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum and Wellcome Collection. Her critically acclaimed exhibition Susan Aldworth: The Portrait Anatomised was shown at the National Portrait Gallery in 2013, and Realisation was shown at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 2017. She is currently artist in residence at York University exploring sleep. She is a regular presenter on BBC Radio, and represented by TAG Fine Art.
